Australian Dementia Research Forum 2023

Dr Marianne Coleman attended the Australian Dementia Research Forum in Gold Coast where she shared her researcher journey with attendees of the ADNet Early and Mid-Career Researcher workshop, and her experiences of the sponsorship programme, in which she received expert mentorship from NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellow Dr Monica Cations. Marianne also presented a poster at the event about her research funded by the Dementia Australia Research Foundation, encouraging people living with dementia to disclose their diagnosis to the optometrist to enable appropriate adaptations to be made before, during and after the appointment.

NSW Fall Prevention and Healthy Ageing Network Annual Forum

Clinical Vision Research Fellow Dr Marianne Coleman presented a poster at NSW Fall Prevention and Healthy Ageing Network Annual Forum which took place in Sydney, showing that normative stereoacuity thresholds in older adults vary by test used, and that average stereopsis is reduced in older adults living with dementia.

Collaborative Workshops at Hokkaido University

Hokkaido University’s Graduate School of Health Sciences hosted Dr Marianne Coleman, Dr Kwang Cham (University of Melbourne), and Dr Sandra Iuliano, (Western Health and the University of Melbourne) where they visited rehabilitation hospitals and aged care facilities, both private and publicly funded through Japan’s Long Term Care Insurance system.

Marianne presented a guest lecture to occupational and physiotherapy students about the impact of vision problems in stroke, dementia and Parkinson’s Disease upon neurorehabilitation. Together with Hokkaido University colleagues and allied health students, Marianne, Kwang and Sandra helped to run an interprofessional education afternoon for over 70 allied health professionals across Japan and Australia, including discussion groups about barriers and facilitators to interprofessional education, research and practice within allied healthcare for healthy ageing. This is a multidisciplinary collaboration featuring optometry, orthoptics, nutrition, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, funded by the University of Melbourne-Hokkaido University Joint Research Workshops Fund.
